Data Usage Rights

Sciente distinguishes between metadata, abstracts and full text. Full text, excerpts, AI analysis, snippets and export are permitted only where authorized by the article's license, an agreement with the rights holder, or the user's own project-related rights.

Updated:

For users, this page explains which data are available and where. For publishers and rights holders, it also explains how to contact us about permissions or content removal.

Default rule

Metadata. May be searched, stored and displayed with attribution to the source.

Abstracts. Used with care — they are not automatically treated as open access.

Full text. Content with an unknown license, bronze/free-to-read content, green OA without a license, and subscription content remain link-only.

What this means for users

  • Metadata and abstract searches are available across all connected sources.
  • Full text is retrieved only if the article's license permits it; otherwise, we display a link to the publisher.
  • AI analysis and summaries are applied only to material you have the right to process.
  • Files you upload to a project are processed only within that project and do not enter the shared corpus.
  • The article card shows the source and available actions (metadata, abstract, full text and export).

Sources we actually use

Search through the interface (selected by the user)

  • PubMed / NCBI E-utilities
  • DOAJ
  • Wiley (metadata)
  • bioRxiv / medRxiv
  • J-STAGE

Full-text retrieval (on request)

  • Europe PMC fullTextXML
  • PMC BioC
  • Unpaywall (OA locator)
  • OpenAlex (OA locator)
  • Wiley TDM — blocked by default
  • User files (within the project)

Metadata / background processing

  • Crossref (DOIs, licenses and references)
  • OpenAlex (citation graph)
  • SciELO — background ingestion

We do not connect Cochrane as a data source. The name 'Cochrane' appears in the system only as part of the methodological assessment tool Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2).

Source-specific policy

Each source has its own terms of use. Click the source or license name to open the original rules.

SourceSource licenseBasis for our use
PubMed / NCBI E-utilitiesNCBI Disclaimer & Copyright and E-utilities rules (no exclusive rights to article text).Metadata and abstracts are searched, stored and displayed in the user's project with PubMed identified as the source. We do not request full text from NCBI; we provide a link to PMC or the publisher.
PMC OA Subset / PMC BioCIndividual articles' CC licenses (CC0 / CC BY / CC BY-SA / CC BY-NC / CC BY-ND); the Open Access Subset is available for reuse under these licenses. We retrieve, index and process full text with AI only if the article is licensed under CC0 or CC BY. CC BY-SA requires manual review. CC BY-NC and CC BY-ND are blocked for the commercial service. We display attribution for all content (author, journal, DOI, and license name and URL).
Europe PMCEurope PMC Terms of Use (API access terms only) and individual articles' CC licenses within the Open Access Subset. We collect metadata and abstracts with attribution to Europe PMC. We store and process full text only after checking the license (CC0 / CC BY at article level). Otherwise, we provide only a publisher link.
DOAJDOAJ metadata are under CC0 (Public Domain Dedication); full texts are governed by the CC license of the individual article or journal. We freely use metadata and abstracts (CC0) with attribution to DOAJ. We do not download full text from DOAJ itself; we follow the publisher link and apply the same license check as for PMC.
Crossref REST APICrossref metadata are under CC0 (Public Domain). TDM links do not themselves grant permission to use the text.We use CC0 metadata for DOI-based enrichment, the citation graph and identifying an article's license. Publisher abstracts are stored with care: they are subject to the publisher's rights, not Crossref's.
UnpaywallThe Unpaywall database is under CC0; reuse of the PDFs themselves is governed by the original article's or repository's license. We store Unpaywall metadata (CC0) and use them as a rights signal. We download a linked PDF/HTML only if the license is CC0/CC BY. Bronze, green without a license, and unknown remain link-only.
OpenAlexOpenAlex data are under CC0 (Public Domain). External full texts are governed by their publisher's or repository's license. We use CC0 metadata for enrichment, open-access discovery and the citation graph. External PDFs remain link-only where the location has no machine-verifiable, commercially compatible license.
Wiley (including Cochrane Library / CDSR)Wiley Online Library Terms & Conditions; TDM/AI requires a separate Wiley TDM Agreement or commercial contract. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews is published by Wiley and is subject to the same terms. We display Wiley/Cochrane metadata with a publisher link and store abstracts with care. Full text and Cochrane reviews are blocked for the commercial service, indexing and AI processing until a Wiley Commercial TDM/AI Agreement has been signed (including permission for CDSR). The exception is Wiley OA articles with an explicit CC license.
bioRxiv / medRxivAuthors choose the license: CC0, CC BY, CC BY-NC, CC BY-ND, CC BY-NC-ND or 'No reuse without permission'. medRxiv is marked as not peer-reviewed by default. We display metadata and abstracts with the label 'Preprint, not peer-reviewed' (mandatory for medRxiv). We process full text only under an author-selected CC0 or CC BY license. Other licenses and 'No reuse' remain link-only.
J-STAGEJ-STAGE WS API Terms of Service; rights to articles belong to the publishing societies/publishers, with licensing at individual article level. We display metadata and abstracts with attribution to J-STAGE and the journal. Free access does not equal permission for reuse: we use full text and excerpts only from articles with an explicit CC license. Otherwise, we provide only a link.
SciELOSciELO Open Access Statement (most content is CC BY or CC BY-NC); the license is checked at article or collection level. We store and index metadata and abstracts with attribution to SciELO. Full text is used only under CC0 / CC BY. CC BY-NC is blocked for the commercial service.
User uploads (PDF / Word)Sciente Terms of Use: the user warrants that they have rights to the uploaded content; processing is confined to their project. We use the content strictly within the user's project. It does not enter the shared corpus, is not used to train models and is not visible to other users. It is removed at the request of the user or rights holder.

For publishers and rights holders

Sciente respects authors' and publishers' rights. Full text, excerpts and derived data are processed only under an appropriate license or agreement. If you see content that you believe our platform should not use, or wish to agree terms for reuse, please contact us.

Rights and content removal requests (takedown)

Email for all questions about rights, licenses and content removal: legal@sciente.ru

Please provide the DOI / PMID / PMCID, URL and a description of the complaint. We acknowledge receipt within 2 working days.

What we do in response to a request

  • Remove extracted text, excerpts and cached snippets.
  • Clear AI query logs containing article text.
  • Block repeat retrieval until the license or agreement has been updated.
  • Retain a minimal audit log for compliance.

How rights are checked before retrieval

  1. Before retrieving full text, we determine its license (PMC permissions, Crossref, Unpaywall, OpenAlex, DOAJ or an agreement).
  2. Identify the version: VoR / accepted manuscript / preprint / unknown.
  3. Determine whether storage, AI processing and full-text display are permitted.
  4. Where there is uncertainty, the default is a publisher link only.
